San Diego’s local KFMB Morning News featured The Quin Murphy Foundation, and its founder and president, Brian Murphy. Eric Kahnert from KFMB interviewed Brian about his new book, Losing Quin and the Foundation.

Losing Quin details the medical errors that led to Quin’s passing and the correct diagnosis that was ignored by doctors. Kahnert noted that with a medical diagnosis it’s important to be alert and do research about the health care you are receiving. Murphy’s advise to other parents who may be facing medical roadblocks is to “ask questions… trust your instincts… ask for a second opinion.”

Through this tragedy, The Quin Murphy Foundation was founded in 2010 as a legacy for Quin, and to help students pursuing careers in the medical field. What started out as a family-funded scholarship has progressed to a non-profit Foundation providing scholarships to students year after year. Since 2010, the Foundations as given out over $100,000 in scholarships.

In writing his book, Murphy reached out to doctors to help find a solution to the ever-growing issue of medical errors. He asked how he could help influence change in the healthcare profession. A response from Dr. Peter Pronovost from Johns Hopkins suggested that change occurs “…through love and not hate…” He further told Murphy, “It is people like you sharing your stories in your local communities who will lead the charge.”
